  1. Youth Hostels Association, (YHA). A
  2. registered charity founded in Britain 1930 to
  3. promote knowledge and care of the countryside
  4. by providing cheap overnight accommodation
  5. for young people on active holidays (such as
  6. walking or cycling). Types of accommodation
  7. range from castles to log cabins. YHA is a
  8. member of the International Youth Hostel
  9. Federation, with over 3 million members and
  10. 5,000 youth hostels in 58 countries. YHA
  11. membership is open to individuals of 14 or
  12. over (or 5 if accompanied by an adult). There
  13. are 260 hostels in England and Wales. In
  14. addition to basic accommodation, YHA provides
  15. sporting activities including climbing,
  16. windsurfing, hang gliding, and horse riding.
  17. In the US, the American Youth Hostels
  18. provides information, equipment, trips, and
  19. accommodation for hiking, biking, skiing,
  20. canoeing, and horse-back riding for people of
  21. all ages.
